HSBC Empathy
Two short animations for HSBC, made with Zing Productions and director Jezz Startup, line drawn animation built around still images of real interview subjects, plus a matching title sequence for a companion live action film using the same people.
The Brief
CUMI worked with Zing Productions and director Jezz Startup to bring a set of real interviews to life, combining still images of the people being interviewed with line drawn animation to create a 4-minute animation in just 4 days. CUMI also designed and animated the title sequence for a companion live action film using the same people. The shortage of time meant a lot of decisions had to be made quickly to meet the deadline, but it all came together in the end.
What CUMI Created
One technical issue had to be solved along the way, stopping the background textures from breaking up when lower resolution copies of the film were made. CUMI got round this by adding a light grain over the whole film, softening out the gradients enough that the textures held together at any resolution.
